The Role
The role is responsible for ensuring full compliance with Essar Group policies and all current and future regulatory requirements. It involves delivering high quality reports to both the regulator and Essar Group, meeting all deadlines and accuracy standards. You will contribute to key projects that support legislative obligations and environmental vision, working closely with teams across the refinery to help fulfil Essar’s regulatory commitments. The position also provides essential support to the Environment Manager in managing environmental regulatory projects, improvement initiatives, and associated commitments.
Primary responsibilities:
- Ensure Essar’s environmental compliance with COMAH requirements
- Maintain the site Environmental Risk Assessment, including MATTE‑related assessments
- Provide environmental input to site projects, including ENVID/HAZID, risk registers, LOPA and regulatory submissions
- Coordinate responses to Environment Agency comments on the COMAH report
- Act as environmental lead for IMRA assessments involving environmental risk
- Manage the interface with the EA COMAH inspector and lead EA‑driven intervention visits
- Own the COMAH containment spreadsheet and site aspects register, ensuring alignment with the COMAH ERA
- Audit environmental systems and recommend improvements, support preparation for EA audits
- Provide environmental support to operating areas, particularly where ERA knowledge is required
- Support day‑to‑day activities of the refinery environmental team, including regulatory responses and complaint handling
- Assist with environmental reporting and ISO 14001 activities
- Participate in the Environment Duty Rota in line with site emergency plans
About You
You bring experience of regulatory responsibility within a manufacturing environment and can confidently interpret and work with technical data to a high standard. With proven experience in an environmental, process engineering or operational role, you can demonstrate clear environmental involvement in your previous positions. You either hold a professional environmental qualification or are motivated to work towards one. You are comfortable reviewing legislation and understanding its practical implications, and you have a genuine interest in environmental issues. Strong communication skills, openness and integrity are essential to how you work, along with the ability to handle sensitive matters confidentially. You also have the technical capability and drive needed to support and energise projects across the refinery.
